While testifying in the Washington County Court case of Ford v. Ford, Thomas J. Chase stated: “I was at the burial of James Arterburn's wife. ... Mr Ford and John Billingsly were in conversation at the burying of James Arterburns wife in the year 1841.” Elias Arterburn stated: “The last time I heard [Loyd Ford] talk was four years ago at my sister's- in-law burial. ... The last I heard him say it was in presence of John Billingsly at the burying of James Arterburns wife in 1841.” These statements support the conclusion that the first wife of JAMES ARTERBURN JR. died in 1841. Her identity is unknown, and her gravesite has not been discovered.

JAMES’ second marriage was with MARY “POLLY” SILVESTER, which occurred sometime during the period, 1841-1844. Sullivan County Court records (except Deeds) were destroyed in a courthouse fire in 1863 during the Civil War.
