INVERNESS — Allen John Barbie, 55, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at a Chester hospital after suffering a stroke.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rudyard. Burial with military honors will follow at the Inverness Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday at the Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester.
Barbie was born April 22, 1946, in Havre to Alvin and Anabelle (Pettapiece) Barbie. He grew up on the family farm north of Inverness. He received his education in Inverness and graduated from Inverness High School in 1964.
Allen enrolled at Eastern Montana College in Billings where he played football his freshman year. He then transferred to Northern Montana College in Havre. He returned to Inverness in 1967 and began working for the Inverness School District as a bus driver. During that time, he met an Inverness school teacher, Stanleigh Rae Nerdahl, who later became his wife.
They made their home at Inverness where he began working for John May Construction. He also sold Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance for a shot time, then began working for Fraser's Conoco in 1976. For the past 15 years, Allen managed Fraser's branch station in Galata. he remained a dedicated worker until his declining health forced him to retire last December. He was diagnosed with cancer in September 1998 and underwent many surgeries and chemotherapy treatments. He initially did well, but his condition changed in recent months, so he was being cared for at home by family and hospice nurses.
Allen was baptized Methodist, but attended the Lutheran Church during his married years. He was active in the Inverness community, having served on the Inverness school board, J-I school board, Inverness Volunteer Fire Department, and the Inverness Commercial Club. Allen also was a member of the Chester American Legion.
Allen enjoyed the people in the Galata community and one of his favorite activities was providing treats for the Galata Elementary students at their annual Christmas program.
Allen's hobbies were many. He was known for his gardening skills. He raised a huge vegetable garden for many years and was happy to share his produce with his friends and neighbors. He enjoyed deer and gopher hunting, and was an avid fisherman. He loved to play cards, especially cribbage and pinochle. Allen liked to follow the local school sporting events, mainly the boys basketball team, and was an avid football fan. In his quiet time, he enjoyed reading, and he collected coins, just for the fun of it.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Barbie in 1992, and a nephew, Bryan Barbie.
Survivors include his wife, Stanleigh of Inverness; sons, Aaron Barbie of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Peter (Kathleen) Barbie of Stanford; mother, Anabelle Barbie of Chester; brothers, Lyle Barbie of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bill (Cathy) Barbie of Carson City, Nev., and Larry Barbie of Inverness; sisters, Barbara Jean Belgarde of Forsyth, Mary Ann (Steve) Barbie-Rice of Helena, JoAnne Barbie-Redmond of Greely, Colo.; maternal aunt, Beth Graham of Chester; many nephews, nieces and cousins.
