Alvin Joseph Barbie was born on the family homestead located 8-1/2 miles north of Inverness, Montana. His date of birth was July 4th, 1920 and he was the youngest of 13 children, many of whom died in childbirth and infancy. Alvin's parents were Katherina Hoenig and Peter Barbie. He grew up on the family farm and attended country schools near there. Following his formal education, Alvin began farming with his dad, and eventually took over the farming operations in 1945. For many years he worked during the winter months on the railroad section crew, did auto body work with Wayne Dafoe, and worked construction for John May.

On September 28th, 1941 Alvin married Arabelle Pettapiece at Fort Benton. They made their home and raised their family of seven in the Inverness community from that time. Alvin's health remained good until a recent heart ailment developed. He died during surgery at the Deaconess Hospital in Great Falls on this past Wednesday, May 13th. He was 71 years old.

Alvin had been very active over the years. He was a charter member and past president of the Inverness Commercial Club. He served as a committee member on the Hill County A.S.C.S. board for 11 years. He was a life member of the Havre Elks Club and a past member of the Hingham Oddfellows Lodge. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

Alvin had many hobbies and activities to keep himself busy. He enjoyed raising a vegetable garden each year and was proud of his shelterbelt and the fruit trees around his farmstead. He liked to work in his shop where he did a lot of welding and metal lathing. In addition, he did his own meat cutting for many years. Some of his favorite pasttimes were hunting, fishing and boating. He enjoyed all
sports and was an avid spectator fan of high school basketball.
