Encyclopaedist. Founder of 'Chamber's Cyclopaedia', which is still published. Dr. Johnson claimed his style was based on Chambers'. His epitiaph (written by himself) is 'multis pervulgatus, paucis notus; qui vitam inter lucem et umbram, nec eruditus, nec idiota, literis deditus, transegit'.
