Virginia Torres Fowler was born in Hayward, California on September 23, 1925 to Vincent and Annie Torres.
She grew up in nearby Decoto, California, the older of two daughters. Though her immediate family was small, she was surrounded from both sides of the family by a multitude of aunts and uncles, grandparents and cousins.
Her love of family likely came from these early, close associations; associations that stayed strong and meaningful throughout her life. She had a vivid memory and would tell story after story of times spent with family. Her cousins became both her extended brothers and sisters and her best friends and playmates, and her stories of childhood were filled with recollections of the games they played and the nicknames they gave each other.
Known as ‘Gigi’ to her family and friends, Virginia was a graduate of Heald’s Business College in Oakland, California. She was proud of the secretarial work she did after graduation for well-known firms like General Motors Acceptance Corp and the DeVilbiss Company.
Virginia married her sweetheart, Bruce Fowler, on July 10, 1947 in Reno, Nevada. After many moves around the country for Bruce’s career, they settled in Los Altos, California in 1958. Here they would stay the rest of their lives. They were sealed together and as a family in the Oakland Temple on August 11, 1970, with their three sons Ladd, Gary, and Marc. Bruce preceded Virginia in death in 2008, after 61 years of marriage.
While living in Los Altos Virginia became active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The opportunities for service the church provided were a source of great joy to her, especially when she served as President of the local Relief Society, the church’s women’s group.
Virginia loved to travel and motorhome, and kept detailed logs of the family trips she, Bruce and the boys took. In later life it was just her and Bruce motorhoming around the country, visiting Alaska and Mexico, the east coast and many other places throughout North America.
Virginia passed away July 18th, 2019 in Palo Alto. She is survived by her three sons, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday, July 29th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 190 Jordan Avenue, Los Altos, CA., with a viewing at 9:30am and services at 10:30am. Interment and the dedication of her grave will follow at 12:00 at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, 695 Arastadero Road, Palo Alto. All friends and family are welcome.
