With his brother, the late Uncle Mart Cooper, they headed a colony that emigrated to Howell County early in the 1850's. The colony located at South Fork, where they homesteaded farms and converted the wilderness into fertile country of happy homes.
Mr. Cooper had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for almost 70 years. When Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge was organized in the Mt. Zion settlement on South Fork, Uncle Mart Cooper and John Tyree Cooper were among the charter members. This was long before the Civil War. Later the Lodge was transferred to West Plains.
The Civil War broke up many homes and Mr. Cooper and his brother went into the Confederate army to fight for their native state. At the close of the memorable conflict, both came back to Howell County.
In 1869, Mr. Cooper moved to Houston, Mo.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Neville of Centralia, Wash. and one sister, Mrs. Jane Perkins of Big Sandy, Tenn. who is 95 years old.
