A Time to Be Born
Loretta Ann Wells was born on November 4, 1932 in Littleton, North Carolina to the late Cyrus and Helen Alston. She was the third of five siblings; Sandy, Betty, Delores, and Gilmore. (all preceded her in death)
A Time to Transition
“Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. “Matt. 29:28
She departed this earthly life peacefully on Sunday, September 22, at Mercy Hospital after a lengthy illness. Surrounded by love ones, she responded to her Master’s call and made the move that He had prepared her for. She moved from Bond Street to Heaven’s Lane.
A Time to Learn and Grow
Loretta was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She was a graduate of the 1951 class of Dunbar High School. She was a proud Poet and actively participated in alumni activities that included supporting the community and worshiping at Zion Baptist Church. Dunbar had a special place in her heart because here she met her soul mate and other lifelong friends.
A Time to Work
Early in life she was employed by Neild’s Cleaners. Later she began her career at Mercy Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She enjoyed her work and used her gift of mercy to help others for more than twenty years. Often she would go beyond the call of duty just to make her patients comfortable or feel special.
A Time to Love
Loretta married the love of her life, her high school sweetheart, Wilbert Wells. Together they became the proud parents of three children. They were blessed with two sons; William and Derick and one daughter; Denise. They became her heartbeats! Her reason for living!
Her soul mate, “Will” preceded her in death in 2017. Losing him was devastating but her strength was renewed because of her faith in God and the love of family and friends.
Loretta was a true warrior, strong, faithful and loving. She loved her children, grandchildren, great-grands and was blessed to be a great-great grandmother. Loving and caring for them was her greatest joy. In her opinion “They could do no wrong!” She was an awesome woman, showing love to all in “her” unique way.
Loretta loved to read and faithfully watched her favorite television shows; Family Feud, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
A Time for Family and Friends
Loretta loved her family unconditionally. Family meant everything to her. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends to various destinations such as Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas and more. She enjoyed celebrating special days and achievements with those she love. One of her greatest joys was attending the worship service in Zion, enjoying the Word with her son or daughter by her side.
In the community or at home she would offer words of wisdom and hope to anyone. “She could be heard saying, “It’s gonna be alright, You’ll be fine!”
She was affectionately known as “The Godmother of East Baltimore.”
She will be deeply missed by family and friends

Loretta loved the Lord! She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age at Faith Baptist Church. Later, on November 22, 1998 Loretta united with Zion Baptist Church. She gave Pastor Prentice her hand and joyfully gave her heart to Jesus Christ as the choir sang “Come to Jesus.” She was a faithful member and attended weekly until her health began to fail. She loved “the Word” and she believed in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her relationship with Him allowed her to believe deeply in the power of prayer. She loved her pastor and her Zion Church family. Loretta was blessed to know and love the Savior and we were blessed to know and love her.
A Time to Mourn
Loretta leaves a legacy of love, hope and family. To forever cherish her memory she leaves three loving children; William (Janet), Derick (Carolyn) and Denise. Five grandchildren; Lisa (Jerome), Kimberly (Alex), Chamaneik, Travis, and Derick Jr. Eight great-granchildren; Shanade, LaShae, Mikayla, Jerome Jr. Jaylin, Tre’Joir, Kai, and Kaiden, one great-great grandchild, Tristan.
