The above birth date is from James' death certificate, but his 1900 census has June 1872 as his birth date (he was age 28), and he was age 53 in the 1920 census (thus born about 1867). Tennessee is listed as his birth place in the censuses and on his death certificate; Cocke Co. was his birthplace on the death certificate for one of his children.
He married Cordelia "Cordie" Calfee on 24 June 1894 in Cocke Co., TN, and five known children were born of their union: Josephine Ida, Ella, Alexander Leroy, Nep (or Ness), and Chester Arthur. He was a Farmer who lived some of his early marriage years with his wife and children in Alabama, but the family was living in Jefferson Co., Tennessee in the 1920 census, where he owned his home with no mortgage and worked as a Farmer for himself. He was a resident of White Pine in that county when he died.
He left behind Cordie and at least 3 of their children when he passed away at the age of 61. Cordie's brother, John Henry Calfee, was the informant on his death certificate. [NOTE: The certificate only states that James was buried in White Pine, so he may not have been buried in the White Pine Cemetery. A photo of his gravesite has been requested to determine if he was buried there.]
