Elvira was born to Joseph Cowan and Sarah "Sally" Beard in 1818 in Indiana. On 5 November, 1836, at the age of 18, she married John Lindsey Alexander in Daviess County, Indiana. They had five (5) children: William M.C. Alexander (1838-1878), Asbury (Ashberry) D. Alexander (1842-1865), John Perry Alexander (1845-1880), Elizabeth Dorcas Alexander (1848- 1880) , and Mary Ann F. Alexander (1852-1855). Her first husband, John, died in 1854 followed by her three year old daughter, Mary Ann in 1855. The 1860 census shows Elvira and her family on the farm with her as head of household listed as "farmer". Her two oldest sons were 18 and 15 and likely did most of the farm labor. On 16 Feb 1863 she married another local farmer, a widower by the name of Thomas Horrall. This was the time of the Civil War and all of her sons enlisted for the Union. Asbury D. died in St. Louis in 1865. Elvira died shortly thereafter. Her tombstone has not been located. It is believed that she was buried in Alexander Hill Cemetery, where her first husband lies buried. Many of the stones in Alexander Hill have been toppled or missing.
