CAPTAIN HOLMWOOD.
The many friends of Captain Charles Holmwood (Mercantile Marine) will regret to learn of his death, which took place this morning at " Bushcroft," Opaki. The deceased gentleman, who was 83 years of age, was born at Torquay, Devonshire, England. He came to New Zealand in 1878 in command of the clipper Hyderabad (of which he was part owner). This vessel was wrecked on the Otaki beach. After residing in Wellington for some time he came to the Wairarapa in 1880, and purchased the farm property at Opaki known as "Bushcroft." The late Captain Holmwood was a son of the late Mr Charles Holmwood, of the firm of Holmwood and Holmwood, merchants and shipowners, London, and took up a seafaring life at an early age on board one of the firm's ships. During the Crimean war he served as third officer on one of the troopships. Most of his nautical life was spent in the Indian trade. His genial disposition made him very popular, and his many kindly actions won for him a great number of sincere friends. The late Captain Holmwood was married in 1860 at St. John' s, Newfoundland, to Miss Edgar, who predeceased him by ten years. He leaves a family of four sons and two daughters, namely, Messrs Charles, Edgar, Alan (Hastings), and Bernard Holmwood, and Mrs A. C. Stewart (Upper Hutt) and Mrs H. L. Jones, who are all well known locally, and who will have general sympathy in the sad loss they have sustained. WAIRARAPA DAILY TIMES, VOLUME 44, ISSUE 13671, 22 OCTOBER 1918
