He worked on the farms of Henry Hesse and Bernard Stottmann in Acquackanonk (later Clifton) until his family arrived. The families knew each other in Hanover and remained close in New Jersey. While living with the Stottmann’s Henry became a naturalized citizen, the only one of the Kettman family to do so. He would be a life long farmer.
By 1910 he was living with and working on his father's farm in Richfield (Clifton), a vegetable truck farm. A big part of the family’s life was the Saint Boniface Roman Catholic Church in Paterson - a German speaking center for the community.
After his father died in 1917 he and his brothers continued to work the farm. The same year he married, at age 40, Louisa Veilhauer Besmer (1894-1956). After marriage he joined her St. John's Lutheran Church and they had two sons - Henry (1921-1990) and Walter (1927-2014).
Henry was also a member and very active in the Richfield, later Clifton, Fire Company with his brother Garry. During World War II he worked for John Mitchell in Jersey City, while still working the farm with his brothers.
Louisa died In 1956 when they lived at 526 Broad Street in Clifton and was buried in Paterson's Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Their son Henry was in the Navy in WWII and became a full time fireman in the Paterson Fire Department, while Walter became a prominent artist living in California. Henry lived another 11 years in Clifton until 1967.
