William Cecil Bauer died Monday, June 11, 2007, at St. Catherine's Village.There will be a private family service and burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. He was a communicant of St. James Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Mr. Bauer was born on November 12, 1916, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of the late Charles E. Bauer and Harriet Jane Dunn Bauer. He received his engineering degree graduating Magna Cum Laude from Louisiana State University and was a member of Tau Beta Pi Fraternity. Following graduation, he was recruited by Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. He began as a linesman but was quickly moved to management. He retired in 1978 as president of South Central Bell for Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. He served as the national president of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Cecil Bauer served on the Board of Directors of several companies including Vulcan Materials, West Point Pepperell, SouthTrust Bank, Brookwood Medical Center of Birmingham, Liberty National Insurance Co. and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He contributed to his community by serving as president of the Birmingham division of the American Cancer Society, chairman of the Birmingham Symphony and Festival of Arts, the Boy Scouts of America, the Salvation Army and was awarded Birmingham's "Man of the Year". One of his most rewarding accomplishments was chairing an organization to improve race relations in Alabama during the civil rights movement.
Serving four years in the Army Signal Corps with the rank of Captain, he spent two years overseas in England and India.
After retirement, one of Mr. Bauer's greatest enjoyments was his research involving his family genealogy. He will be lovingly remembered for his genuine interest in others, his kind and generous spirit and his love and devotion for his wife and family.
Survivors include: wife, Jean Roberts Bauer of Jackson; brother-in-law, Bill Roberts and wife Betty of Atlanta; nieces, Gwen Townsend of Cleveland, TN, Laurie Sibley and husband Larry of Baton Rouge, Jane Blount of Baton Rouge, Sandra Tucker and husband Davey of Jackson, Suzanne Becker and husband Karl of Warrenton, V A, Betsy Williams and husband Tony of Clarkdale, AZ; nephews, Jim Harris and wife Libby of Charlotte, NC, Scott Roberts and wife Karen of Linthicum, MD and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Charles E. Bauer, Jr. and Philip Bauer and sister, Lucille Bauer McDonald.
