Barbara Jean Johnson-Gore, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2019, in Conyers Ga.

She was the daughter of the late James Johnson and Jessie Young Johnson.

She was a graduate of Howard High School class of 1950 and Cleveland State College. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church,where she also attended Junior High School. She later affiliated herself with Union Grove Baptist Church where she was baptized under the leadership of Rev. Lenier. Connecting with the Mount Olive Baptist Church, Barbara served on the Mother’s Board and sung in the choir for a number of years under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Sparks. After the closing of Mount Olive Baptist Church, she chose to join and worship with Second Saint James Missionary Church while also continuing her service on the Mother’s Board for some time under the ministry of Rev. Freddie Collier. Additionally, she was a member of a widows group at Shepherds Arm Ministry.

She worked for the City of Chattanooga Human Services Department of Child Care for 25 years, retiring in 1994.

She was preceded in death by parents, James and Jessie Young Johnson, husband; Charles W. Gore Sr., daughter; Sharron G. Gordon, brothers; Melvin, Earl, and Leon Johnson, sisters; Leola, Mable and Maud Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Charles (Jennifer) W. Gore Jr. of Conyers, Ga.and Phillip (Earline) Gore of Chattanooga, Tn.; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Vivian Meeks of Buffalo, NY.,; sister-in-law, Claytena Gore of Chattanooga, Tn.; devoted son-in-law, R. DeWayne Gordon of Chattanooga, Tn.,; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Public viewing will begin at 12 noon Friday, Sept. 27, 2019, and the family will receive friends from 6-7 pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Alfred B. Johnson officiating. Interment: Forest Hills Cemetery.
