Dorothy “Marie” Hart of Des Moines, passed away on September 19, 2019 at the age of 91.

Marie was born on March 28, 1928 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Arthur K. and Violet A. Schanche and resided in Hills, Minnesota. Marie completed her education in the Ames, Iowa School District. Later while attending the University of Iowa, she met her future husband John T. Hart.

Marie and John were married in August of 1948 in Ames, Iowa and returned to Iowa City so she could continue her education. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Iowa.

The couple moved to Des Moines where they owned and operated the Dairy Queen on SW 9th Street for over 10 years. Marie later went to work for the YWCA, and remained employed there for several years. In 1984, she was awarded her Master’s Degree in Science with an emphasis on Guidance Counseling from Drake University. Marie was instrumental in creating the first safe house for battered women. She was a “Night Owl” and enjoyed countless hours of clipping newspaper and magazine articles. Marie was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines and the American Association of University Women.

Marie and John had been married for 66 years at the time of his death in 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Catherine Sanders; and her granddaughter, Lisa.

She is survived by her brother, Arthur Schanche of California; son, Timothy of Texas; daughter, Pamela of Des Moines; grandchildren, Jeremy, Emma Gean, Elizabeth and Kathrine; great-grandchildren, Chloe, James, Noah, Michael and Hudson; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

A private burial will be held at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
