Mary Duke was a daughter of James Duke and his wife, Mary (Byrd) Duke, of Charles City County, Virginia. She married Benjamin Ward, a son of Richard Ward and his wife, Frances (Worsham) Ward. Mary (Duke) Ward resided with her son, Dr. William Ward, at the time of her death. She was buried at the family cemetery on his property in Rutherford County, Tennessee.
