Businessman, Professional Football Team Owner. The son of iconic hotel magnate Conrad Hilton, he was raised in Los Angeles following his parent's divorce. He began working humbly as a parking attendant at a the historic Town House in Los Angeles, prior to attending the New Mexico Military Institute. During the closing months of World War II, he served with the United States Navy in the South Pacific as photographer's assistant and following his return home, he attained his pilot's license and studied at the University of Southern California's Aeronautical School. In 1947, he married Marilyn Hawley and joined his family's empire eventually succeeding his father as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hilton Hotels in 1966. Outside of the hotel industry, Hilton made a name for himself in professional football as one of the founders of the American Football League. As proprietor of the Los Angeles Chargers (who move to San Diego following the 1960 season), he saw a league championship in 1963. He relinquished ownership in 1966 in order to focus on the Hilton Corporation. He retired in 1998 and was succeeded by his son, Steven M. Hilton. He continued to run the Hilton Foundation until 2014. He was the grandfather of television personality Paris Hilton.
