Sarah was born to Charles and Oma Clifford on June 5, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio. She married Rev. David Gray on October 17, 1964 after they met at Marion College (Indiana Wesleyan University). She served alongside him for more than fifty years in various church ministries, and almost fifty-five years of marriage. They retired as pastor of Hart Wesleyan Church in 2013.

Sarah was also a registered nurse and worked for ten years at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility and then retired from Tendercare in Ludington in 2012. She loved her family, loved rocking grand-babies to sleep, and loved to travel, especially to see a Gaither concert.
