Frances was the daughter of Samuel Spoffard Chipman and Alta H. Sutherland.

Frances' first husband was Forest Richer (1845-1886), also of Deerfield Township, Mecosta County, Michigan. They married April 10, 1870 in Mecosta County. They had six children: Ada Bell, Anna E. , Sarah "Etta", Fitch, William and Gaylord.

Forest died in 1886 and Frances married Harlan Emerson Woolworth September 15, 1888 in Deerfield Township, Mecosta County, Michigan. They had two sons: Charles Edward Woolworth and Oscar Chipman Woolworth.
