A well-known Covington businessman died Tuesday afternoon after being shot in eastern New Orleans, where friends said he was looking at investment property. Police released few details about the crime.

Bruce Cucchiara, 57, was shot in the 4500 block of Papania St. and died shortly after noon at the LSU Trauma Center, said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office. Police responding to a call at 10:14 a.m. found Cucchiara beside his truck at the Mark VII apartment complex, according to preliminary information.

Information about motive and suspects was not available immediately.

News of Cucchiara's murder quickly made its way across Lake Pontchartrain to St. Tammany Parish, where friends and business associates said they were shocked and saddened.

"He was very strong, family-oriented, kid-oriented guy who was always involved in the community,'' said Rykert Toledano, a friend and Covington attorney. "He loved coaching kids' sports.''

Another friend, Steve Hendry of Covington, said he and Cucchiara were kindred spirits who spent a lot of time together coaching their sons' sports teams and also attending LSU sporting events. Perhaps owing to Cucchiara's training in the banking industry, Hendry said attending a game with Cucchiara was easy.

"You didn't have to keep track of the game -- he was a fantastic statistician,'' Hendry said.

Hendry said he and Cucchiara coached youth sports together for the Covington Recreation Department several years ago. He said Cucchiara was getting back into the coaching game of late with his stepson.

"I used to always joke with him about, 'Better you than me,' '' Hendry said. "But he loved it. He loved coaching any sport. He even coached when we didn't have sons. That's how far back he went.''

Cucchiara worked for the Riecke family in Covington, which has numerous business interests. Cucchiara was the first president and chief executive officer of Resource Bank when it opened in Mandeville in 1998. Hendry said he also worked at American Bank and then ran the Southeastern Louisiana Water & Sewer Co., before it was bought by St. Tammany Parish government in 2010.

Although police released few details as of Tuesday evening, Hendry and Toledano said they both understood that Cucchiara was in eastern New Orleans looking at a development property when he was shot.

"He was looking at a piece of business property. He never suspected he would not come home,'' Toledano said. "It just seems incomprehensible.''

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 1.877.903.7867. Callers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn as much as $2,500 for tips that lead to an indictment.
