Sgt. Cody Smith, 31, of Madrid, Iowa, passed away on September 14, 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa at Mercy Hospital of a genetic heart condition. Funeral services will be 11:30 am Friday, September 20, 2019 at Sundberg Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Cody will be buried with Military Honors 2pm Friday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Cody was born in Red Oak, Iowa to Marty Smith and Donna Govig on September 3, 1988. He went to school in Newton, Iowa. He attended DMACC college. Cody worked at Continental Manufacturing in Madrid, Iowa. After high school Cody joined the military. He was part of the Charlie Co. 1-168 Infantry Battalion and served overseas in Afghanistan in 2010-11 where he was appointed Sgt, and received a Combat Infantrymen Badge.

Cody married Laura Smith and had three beautiful daughters and a son that he adored. Being a husband and father was the role he most cherished in his life.

Cody was an avid hunter and loved fishing. His large stature belied his gentle caring nature. He was known for his goofiness, kindness and smile. He was a friend to all and would do whatever he could to make those around him laugh and feel comfort. Cody befriended everybody and didn’t know a stranger.

Cody is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Ladonna Smith and Edward Smith; maternal grandparents Verla Bean and Edward Govig.

Cody will be greatly missed by his wife, Laura Smith; son Jackson Gowdy; daughters Kinsley, Remi, and Quinlyn; his mother
Donna Govig; father Marty Smith; step-father Michael Waskow; step-grandparents Dale (Judy) Vanderlinden; brother Travis (Sonja) Govig; sisters Brandi Smith; Johnna (Joe) Kain; niece Piper Govig; special aunt and uncle Justin (Kyla) Smith; many aunts and uncles, cousins and other loving family members; and his military brothers and sisters.
