Charles A. Doss
1935-2014

Charles Alec Doss, 78, of Santa Maria, CA passed away peacefully in his daughters home in Paso Robles, CA, on January 4, 2014, after a fierce 26 month battle with Stage-4 Lung Cancer and Stage-4 Prostate Cancer.
Charles, Chuck was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on August 2, 1935. After his Mother left when he was only 8 years old he was put in charge of raising his 6 year old brother and they both had to get tough and grow up fast. From the time he was 8 years old until the time he passed away he was he was tough as nails and he never quit. He spent his life taking care of his family and his friends and giving back to his community.
Chuck's freshman year in high school was a pivotal time for him. He was kicked out of school that year because after attending his 1st period math class he would leave school to go to work at the local gas station. So with an 8th grade education he set out on his quest to become financially independent. It wasn't too many years before he owned that gas station. This was just one of the many successful ventures that he had throughout his life.
After selling the gas station he rode his motorcycle from Wichita Falls, Texas to Bakersfield, CA where he met the love of his life, Wilma Rae Boucher, at Art DQs Drive In. They married in 1956 and were married for 39 years. In March of 1960 they had their first child, Shari. Soon afterwards they decided to move to beautiful Shell Beach, CA to raise their family and in 1961 Chuck Jr. was born.
In 1963 Chuck and his father-in-law, Del Clayton, set out to build the Worlds Fastest B-Fuel Dragster, in their garage, in their spare time after work. And in that same year they accomplished their goal!! After such a huge success the sky was the limit!! Next on the agenda Chuck got his pilots license and bought two twin-engine Cessnas which he enjoyed flying on the weekends as well as taking the family to the lake for water skiing fun. And then it was off to the races! He partnered with Lee Collins, Jim Vreeland and Tons of Fun Stables to establish himself in the Through Bred and Quarter Horse Racing World where they graced the winners circle many times. After becoming a Licensed General Contractor and Engineer Chuck and his wife Wilma owned and operated Doss Construction Co. Inc. for 30 successful years. He also enjoyed a long a prosperous partnership in the cattle business with his lifelong friend Neeler Pryor. Chuck was always a respected member of the community and he served his community well. He was a lifetime member of the Optimist Club and served as President for four consecutive years and Optimist of the Year in 1996. He was also a member of the Santa Maria Elks Club for 47 years, the Operating Engineers for 44 years, the AQHA for 29 years and the NRCHA for 19 years. But his greatest passion was team roping. He caught the roping bug in 1965 and purchased his first rope horse. He enjoyed many wonderful years of traveling around the country to rope with his grandsons, Adam and Brad and his sons-in-law, Mark and Glenn and his good friend Leon Brite winning several Championships with all of them. The Santa Barbara Fiesta was his favorite event and this past August was his 48th consecutive year competing in the team roping, he roped there for the last time with his grandson Adam on his 78th birthday with his entire family there to cheer him on!!
In his final days Chuck told each and every one of his family members that he was at peace and that he had done everything that he had wanted to do, he had enjoyed his life and he felt that he had a great run!! If you asked him how he was feeling, even as sick as he was, he would either say, Im one of the best that you are going to meet today or he would say if I was any better Id have to be twins! He always said if you believe in yourself you can accomplish anything and he surely proved that in his own life. And now it is his belief in his family that is giving them courage to get through this devastating loss. Chuck enjoyed so many accomplishments in his life but one of his greatest honors was having his great granddaughter Charlee named after him.

Chuck is survived by his daughter Shari Luis, son-in-law Mark Luis, granddaughter LaRae Luis of Paso Robles, CA; grandson Adam Teixeira and his wife Cassie, great granddaughter Charlee Teixeira of Nipomo, CA; grandson Brad Teixeira of Santa Maria, CA; son Chuck Doss Jr. of Santa Barbara, CA; grandson Cameron Doss of Orcutt, CA; brother Jim Doss of Bakersfield, CA; and his wifes cousin Saundra King of Los Alamos, CA.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Doss, his parents Emmett and Irene Doss, his brother Emmett Doss, his mother and father-in-law Minnie and Del Clayton.

Services will be held Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Dudley Hoffman Mortuary. A Celebration of Life reception will follow at the Santa Maria Elks Club.
