Leif was born on the family farm between Shaunavon and Instow, Sask. He moved to Shaunavon and lived there until 1941. Leif was a veteran who joined the Royal Navy in 1941 and served in WWII in the Atlantic arena. His service lasted until 1947. He married Elma Helen (Wiebe) Aasen in July of 1945 and they remained married until Elma's passing in August of 2011. Leif entered UBC in 1947 and Vancouver Normal School in 1948. He graduated in 1949 and went on to teach at North Surrey High School from 1949 to 1953. From 1953 until his retirement in 1980, he was the Principal of Elementary schools in Surrey B.C: South Westminster, J.T.Brown/Strawberry Hills, Dr. Sinclair, Cedar Hills/Mary Jane Norris/ Royal Heights, and M.J. Shannon. While Principal, Leif returned to UBC and graduated with a BA in 1961. After retirement Elma and Leif spent their years travelling. Most memorable was their trip to Norway. Leif is predeceased by his loving wife Elma, his son Lorne, and his sister Elsa Allan. Leif is survived by his siblings Sonja Lewis, Laila Turtle and Gordon Vernon. Leif's sons Eric and Gordon (Wendy), daughter-in-law Lynda (Lorne), and his grandchildren Meghan, Olen (Billie-Jo), Matts (Kristen), and Elin (Brad) will dearly miss him. He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and friends.
