Gerald L. Cooper Sr., 85, of Huntingdon, and formerly of Alexandria, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019, at UPMC Altoona.

Born July 21, 1934, in Mount Union, he was a son of the late George and Evelyn (Shingler) Cooper. He was united in marriage to the former Pauline Edwards Aug. 16, 1952, in Sunbury. Mrs. Cooper survives at their residence.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Hoffmaster and her husband, Galen, of Petersburg, and Bunnie Frye and her husband, Tom, of Harrisburg; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Cooper, of Altoona; five grandchildren, Jamie, Stephanie, Pam, Geri and Emily; and three great-grandchildren, Ellie, Cooper and Jocelyn.

Also surviving are a brother and a sister, Donald Cooper and his wife, Diane, and Barbara Greene, all of Alexandria.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald L. Cooper Jr. March 10, 2018; and three sisters, Gail Goodman, Helen Rupert and Katie Runk.

Mr. Cooper was a member of Christ Reformed Church of Alexandria.

He was a life member of the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Co.; a member of the Mount Moriah Lodge 300, F&AM, Huntingdon, for over 50 years; a member of the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona; and a former member of the William P. Spyker American Legion Post 520, Alexandria.

Mr. Cooper was a graduate of Huntingdon High School.

He was employed by Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Huntingdon, from 1955 until 1965, and was subsequently employed by the Mead Corp., Alexandria, from 1965 until 1967. In 1967, he began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a railroad signalman, retiring from Conrail, Altoona Middle Division, in 1998.

Mr. Cooper enjoyed woodworking and was particularly proud of a special cradle he built for his granddaughter. He also liked traveling with his wife and family to Tennessee, and in his earlier years, enjoyed hunting and following Juniata Valley sports.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, with Rodney Cook officiating. Interment will be made in the Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery, Alexandria.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the funeral home. A masonic memorial service will begin at 7:45 p.m Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in remembrance of Gerald L. Cooper Sr. may be made to Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, PA 17822, in honor of Stephanie Hoffmaster.
