Finnell, a railroad engineer from Jefferson City, was one of five people killed in an early morning collision between two fast-moving Missouri Pacific freight trains near Blackwater, Missouri. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the cause of the accident to be human error: the railroad telegraph operator at Boonville fell asleep on duty and failed to signal to the engineers which train had right of way.
