Edna Mae was born in Jud, North Dakota, August 21, 1923 to Sol and Ella Sperling. She died September 11, 2019 in Yakima.

She grew up in Bismarck where her dad owned a general store. After high school she attended and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. She taught for a year in Minn. and then came out west and taught in Yakima for a year, and then a year as a home economics teacher in Selah. Never quite satisfied as a teacher, she was introduced to the food service business and became head dietician for the Selah School District for 28 years.

During those early years she met her future husband, Jack Green, who introduced himself to her while she was enjoying a milkshake at the local soda fountain. They married in 1946 and had one daughter, Linda. Jack went into law enforcement, becoming a police officer and finally Chief of Police in Selah. During those years, as well as being an excellent cook and recipe collector, she became a member of the American School Food Service Association, and was elected to the national board. She was also president of the Washington State Home Ec Association. In the meantime she became a professional-class sewer. Cookbooks and trips to the fabric stores were always a favorite. Yard work was left to Jack! She also was a longtime member of Central Lutheran Church. She loved the mountains and trips to the beach, and though she and Jack and daughter Linda made many trips back to North Dakota, as well as California and New York City to visit family and friends, she was always happy to come home to Washington! Hawaii too was a favorite.

After living and working in Selah and building two houses, when it was time to start taking life a bit easier, they moved to Living Care Retirement Community in the year 2000. Jack died soon after but Edna continued living there, quite happy with the social life and care until the end.

Edna is survived by her daughter Linda and her husband Mike Ritch. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Donald Sperling, husband Jack, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Live your life - not your age.

There will be a graveside service for Edna at 1 PM, Friday, September 20, 2019, at West Hills Memorial Park, 11800 Douglas Road, Yakima.
