Darrell Allen Wright, age 77, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was born December 18, 1941 in Tuscola, Illinois to Henry Leland Wright and Mary Pauline Wright (Wyne). Darrell grew up in Bellville, Indiana and attended high school in nearby Clayton.
Shortly after graduating high school, he began dating the love of his life Annice after being set up by a mutual friend. They became husband and wife on September 6, 1964.
Soon after, Darrell graduated with honors from Purdue University with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1966.
Darrell worked as a Civil Engineer for 38 years and was a proud member of the MENSA elite for 30 years. The last few years of his career he was a mentor to a group of young engineers at MSA in Madison, WI. In a recent card from all the staff they each said such kind words. Mike Statz, his boss, said, “We have great memories of you being at MSA and the passion and knowledge that you shared with us. I am a better person and engineer because of that interaction.” Mike Mahoney said, “I’ve thought about you and the lessons on good traffic planning many times over the years. I was molded into a better engineer to clients from what you taught me.”
Darrell was always playing practical jokes that were funny, but not hurtful. One that stands out was when his dear friends Dick and Joan VanDyke were away on a mission trip to Zimbabwe, Africa. Darrell typed a letter from Farmer Brown to put with the rest of their mail. This letter went on and on about how the planned delivery of 2 tons of manure would arrive the day after they returned. As he was typing this letter, he laughed so hard he cried.
Annice and Darrell had “Adventure Wednesdays” most weeks after they moved to Colorado in 2015. They went all over Colorado visiting museums, hiking trails, parks, and well-known sites. Darrell was always telling Annice to walk 6 feet ahead of him, so the wild animals would get her first. Anyone that knows Darrell, knows that he would give his life for Annice and never allow anything to happen to her. But the way he would tell the stories always made us laugh.
Darrell was a true Christian man. He was a faithful church member/ leader his entire adult life. Darrell chaired the elder and mission boards in churches they attended. The Gideon organization has also been blessed by Darrell’s service since 1975. He traveled extensively for the Gideon’s speaking and encouraging others about the importance of God’s word. He traveled to over 26 countries on 5 continents. One of his favorite assignments was to lead a committee to develop the “Life Book” program that worked with youth groups to help them share their faith with other students.
He put only his relationship with his Lord before his wife and family. With his many travels around the world with the Gideon’s International ministry he always carried a memory verse given to him by Annice, Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Mary Pauline Wright of Bellville, Indiana.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Annice Wright of Colorado Springs, Colorado; children, Karen and husband Craig Kaley of Denver, Colorado, Brian Wright and wife Hannah Miller of Senoia, Georgia, Teresa and husband Michael McCulloch of Queen City, Texas, Susan and husband Tim Stover of St. Charles, Illinois; grandchildren, Scott, Nicole, and Tyler Kaley of Fort Collins, Colorado, Taylor, Connor, Dillon, Chloe, and Declan Wright of Senoia, Georgia, Cori McCulloch and husband Brian Gain of Fort Worth, Texas, Hunter McCulloch of Waco, Texas; sister, Anita Brenner of Olalla, Washington; and several other nephews, nieces and cousins.
