A boating party for four Lanphier High school students ended in tragedy yesterday afternoon when one of the group, Eugene Stevenson, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stevenson of Springfield, drowned in Lake Springfield as he aided one of his friends who had become exhausted while swimming trying to retrieve a boat oar. Stevenson drowned as he sought to retrieve his life preserver which had broken away from him as he had thrown one to his friend. The tragedy occurred about 4:20 p.m. off the east shore line of the lake, southeast of the Lindsay bridge.

Eugene was a member of the high school a cappella choir and was planning to accompany the choral group on an outing to St. Louis today which was canceled last night.

He was born in Springfield Sept. 16, 1929, and attended Enos school and had completed his junior year at Lanphier. He was a regular on the high school basketball team last year and was expected to be one of the key men in the makeup of the 1946-47 team.

He was survived by his parents and a sister, Geraldine, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Farrand, city, and grandmother Mrs. Bessie Stevenson, city. Funeral services at Third Presbyterian church. Burial in Oak Ridge cemetery.
