Jeannette Benton was born August 9, 1925, to Walter B. and Elizabeth Maier Errickson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died at Discovery Care Center in Salmon, Idaho on September 8, 2019 at 94 years of age.

She received her schooling in Philadelphia and upon high school graduation in 1943 she was hired by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a secretary, where she worked until resigning in March of 1954 to start a family.

She married Victor Calvin Benton in Philadelphia on September 14, 1946 and they moved to Croydon, PA where they built their own home. They sold their new home and moved to Salmon, ID in August 1954 to be nearer to her mother and stepfather (Betty and Maynard Leslie). Salmon also reminded Vic of his hometown of North Woodstock, NH. Three children, Scott, Vicki and Mark were born and raised in Salmon.

Vic went to work at Lemhi Lumber and Jean began the job of raising Scott and eventually Vicki and Mark. When they were small she enjoyed sewing, made most of her own clothes, dresses for Vicki, curtains and slipcovers for furniture. She was an avid reader and also knitted, crocheted, and baked.

Jean began work at Herndon Insurance/Lemhi Title in 1966 as secretary, became a licensed agent, sold insurance and retired in April 1988.

In May of 1988 she and Vic realized a lifelong dream and took a 45 day AMTRAK excursion across the country to visit friends and relatives in Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New Hampshire.

In November 1988 she joined Hospice of Salmon Valley as a board member, secretary and volunteer in the office. In April of 1992 she was appointed Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator, a position she held until she retired again in August of 2000.

After retirement Jean and Vic enjoyed yard work, cross-country skiing, walking and riding bicycles together. They were both dedicated lifetime members of the Presbyterian Church. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and helped with fundraisers. Jean was also a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Salmon Anna Rebekah Lodge.

Jean lovingly cared for her husband Vic through a long illness until his death April 11, 2010.

After Vic’s death she adopted a dog named Poppy. She took Poppy for walks, watered and mowed her lawn, tended her roses and raised African Violets. When her memory began slipping she moved to Imperial Apartments where she resided for a short time until she moved into Assisted Living at Discovery Care Center in Salmon. She participated in the exercise classes and loved listening to the Old Time Fiddlers when they performed there. She enjoyed Tuesday walks with son Scott which always began at Rise and Shine with the coffee special of the day and sometimes a cookie or mini-pie. She called it “coffee day” and fully enjoyed these excursions and the walks that always followed. These ended with her recent debilitating stroke.

Jean was preceded in death by her father, mother, stepfather, two sisters and husband, Vic.

She is survived by sons: Scott (Mary) Benton, of Salmon, and Mark (Lori) Benton, of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter, Vicki (Mark) Armbruster, of Challis; grandsons: Jonathan (Betsy) Benton, of Boise, and Joshua Benton, of Mountain View, CA; and granddaughters: Ashley (Toby) Wickwire, of Portland, OR, and Becky Armbruster (Andrew Nedimyer), of Seattle, WA.

Funeral services are under the direction of Jones and Casey Funeral Home and memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Salmon Cemetery.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Lemhi County Humane Society on VFW Drive or Hospice of Salmon Valley at 506 Van Dreff St. in Salmon.
