Sept. 16, 1939 - July 13, 2012
Arthur R. Meyer of Shepherd went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2012. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Art was born on September 16, 1939 in St. Louis to Monica and Edward Meyer, the third of nine children in their family. He graduated from Shepherd High School in 1958, where he enjoyed playing football, basketball, and baseball. After attending Ferris State College for one year, he moved back home to work on the family farm where his heart was.
He was married to the love of his life Ruthann Martin on April 16, 1966. Despite his car accident in 1974 that left him paralyzed, Art continued to do the things he enjoyed so much throughout his life. He farmed for several years with his family, enjoyed watching his children's and grandchildren's sporting events, and loved to fish and hunt deer with his son, his brothers, and other family members and friends. He was very involved with Coe Township government and served as Township Supervisor from 1980 to 1996. During that time he was instrumental in the construction of the new Fire Barn and Coe Township Hall. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. And he was a diehard fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Michigan State Spartans.
Art is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 46 years, Ruthann; his children, Mishelle (Todd) Comstock of Shelby, Kevin (Angie) of Boise, Idaho, and Lisa (Dan) Seeley of Alma; seven grandchildren; brothers Jim and Bill (Teresa) Meyer, sisters, Pat (Ron) Beck, Jan (Dan) Grisdale, Barb (Jim) Smith, and Joyce (Doug) Klumpp; brother-in-law Harry (Rose) Martin; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Joseph, both parents, and brothers Virgil and Jerry Meyer.
Funeral will be at the St. Vincent De Paul Church on July 18, at 11 a.m. with Father Fred Kawka officiating, followed by internment at St. Vincent De Paul Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary's School of Alma or to the St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home.
