Oscar John Smith was the son of Carl S. "Charles" Smith (1850-1941) and Maria "Mary" Kinzel Smith (1852-1935). Oscar's parents immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1861 and settled in the Waterloo Region about 1863.

Oscar, at age 22, married Clara Cress, age 22, on January 2, 1901. They had three children: Warren, Marvin, and Ada.

Oscar Smith owned and operated the Oscar J. Smith Shoe Co. Ltd., Saint Jacobs, Ontario, with its factory at 8 Spring Street, and a retail store at 1395 King Street North. At its height, the factory manufactured close to 1500 shoes a day, selling to major stores across Canada. It closed in the 1950s.
