John Fichtner Grasse, Mequon, WI, died Friday, December 20, 2013. He was born April 10, 1927, to John and Antoinette (Fichtner) Grasse in Sister Bay, WI. John is survived by his wife, Marian, his son, Michael Click of Anchorage, AK, and many nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Raymond and Wilbert, sisters, Luetta Petersen, Mabel Kramer, Adelaide Clement and Dorothea Johnson.
He served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine during WWII. He was pleased to be included on a Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and in the Field of Honor event and movie. His yearn for the sea and adventure never left him. Following his service he located in Alaska and founded Grasse Materials Co., a trash removal service. He loved his business and guaranteed his service or you could receive 'double your garbage back'. His business interest expanded to co-founding Going Garbage Company in Sister Bay, with his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothea and Percy Johnson. It was during the Alaska years that he focused on raising his son, Mike, and was active in the Anchorage Jaycees; he fondly remembered when the Jaycees built the grass-roofed Visitor's Center. He also actively lobbied in Juneau on behalf of independent businesses and made a run for Governor of the State of Alaska during one election.
Following his retirement from business, John located in Mequon in a beautiful setting along the Milwaukee River. This afforded him many memorable years with his boats on the river. Being a seasoned and credentialed seaman, he also used his skill piloting boats on many of the country's large rivers, lakes and the Atlantic coast. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Thiensville; the Mequon-Thiensville Optimist Club and was dedicated to going to the YMCA in Brown Deer, exercising daily as much as he was able. He treasured his friendships made in these organizations.
John thrived on his social activities and his presence always added extra joy and laughter to any gathering. He didn't mind the limelight but he was quiet about his generosity; which was appreciated by many family members and friends.
Can one person make a difference in this world? Those who experienced John Grasse's zest for living will agree - Yes!
At John's request there will not be a funeral. The family will have a burial service in Sister Bay, WI, at a future date. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Mequon-Thiensville Optimist Club or the Brown Deer YMCA.
