Son of Dimitrius "John" and Mary (Antone) Abbott, he attended local schools and graduated from Drury High School.
WWII and Korean War Army veteran, he retired in 1967 as a Lt. Col. after more than 20 years service. He was the Army advisor to all National Guard units in Western Massachusetts for the last 4 1/2 years of his career. He began his career as an enlisted man in the former Co. K, Massachusetts National Guard in North Adams. He was a recipient of numerous medals, including three Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars, and the French Croix de Guerre.
During his career he served in various assignments in the United States, Europe, and Turkey. His service included both duty with troops and assignment to special and general staff positions. He fought in five campaigns in the European Theater in WWII.
He leaves his wife, the former Josephine Monahan, whom he married 23 February 1946 in Washington DC, three sons, two brothers, and two sisters.
