Dennis Michael Schmidt was born on August 6, 1939 to Melburn and Berniece (Hawkins) Schmidt in Cherokee, Iowa. He was raised in Cherokee and surrounding communities. Dennis graduated from high school in 1957. After graduation, Dennis worked various jobs, mostly working on road and home construction. On March 21, 1960 he was united in marriage to Charlene Grant in Cherokee. They had four children: Mike, Marsha, Mollie, and Moniece. Their family moved to Colorado in 1966. Dennis and Charlene later divorced and Dennis moved back to Cherokee in 1976. Dennis then met Judy Swenson and they were married on August 23, 1981. They lived in Cherokee for a short time before moving to Le Mars. They had one daughter, Denise ‘DD’. While in Le Mars, Dennis first worked at Plymouth Manor for a few years before becoming the custodian at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He retired in 2000 due to his health.

Dennis took great pride in his work and had a strong work ethic, one he passed down to his children. He really enjoyed construction and being able to build furniture and other items for his family. Dennis learned German from his grandmother and continued to teach himself the language as an adult. He also had a great sense of humor! Dennis’ favorite part of the day was spent at his coffee group in Le Mars – he never missed coffee time with his group of friends.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Judy; children: Mike Schmidt, Marsha (Steve) Chrisman, Mollie Lewis, and Moniece (Doug) Andrus all of Colorado, and Denise ‘DD’ (Greg) Gutierrez of Sioux City, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brothers: John (Jackie) Schmidt, Don (Trish) Schmidt, and Gary (Kristy) Schmidt; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Steve and Todd.
