Mrs. Phyllis Elisabeth Bates Brake went to be with the Lord on May 20, 2006.

As a young lady, she graduated Valedictorian of Petersham High School, in Petersham, Mass; she later attended Duke University. A loving mother and adoring grandmother, she was a devoted Army wife who kept things going while her husband was away on his many deployments. She married her best friend, and the man of her dreams, on October 7, 1945, and has maintained a wonderful marriage for over 60 years. She was a member of St John's Episcopal Church in Hampton, the Retired Officers' Wives Association, the Swindler's Golf Association Wives' Auxiliary, and was an avid bridge player. Her parents Ernest Rogers Bates and Dorothy Elizabeth Towne Bates preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband Ralph Brake; three daughters, Karen Lee Brake Barrett and husband, William H. of Ellicott City, Md., Jacque Brake Jordan of Williamsburg, Mary Wood Brake of Charlottesville; a sister, Virginia Bates Gifford of Athol, Mass; and a granddaughter Gwendolyn Jordan Vila and husband, Robert, of Hollywood, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, at St John's Episcopal Church, 100 W. Queen's Way, Hampton, VA 23669. Inurnment will take place at 11a.m. on Saturday, May 27, at the Brake Family Cemetery, Route 43, Edgecombe County, N.C.
