She graduated from Newton High School in 1924. After attending teachers college at Kirksville for a year, she taught two years at one-room Boatman School in Mercer County.
She met Cody Chipps while teaching in that community. They were married April 10, 1926, at Chillicothe and were married for more than 70 years before his death. They had three children and lived for 18 years in Mercer County and 57 at Raymondville.
Mrs. Chipps became a Christian at age 13 and joined the Newtown Baptist Church. She changed her membership to the Raymondville Methodist Church in 1949. She was a member of the Blue Heaven Club for 56 years and helped organize the first PTA at the Raymondville School.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Johnny Chipps; two sisters, Avis Kazimour and Coral Sammons; and one brother, Dudley S. Martin Jr.
Surviving are a son, Denver of Barnett; a daughter, Mary Johnson of Raymondville; one sister, Willie Lamberson of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Nov. 17 at the Raymondville Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Lindsley officiating. Burial was in the Allen Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
