OBITUARY:
Evelyn Pauline Haynes, 77, a Kennewick, Washington resident for 23 years, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Born April 7, 1941 in Clifton, Arizona, Pauline was the daughter of Evelyn Merl (McDonald) Sloan and Harvey King Sloan. She grew up with four brothers: Merl G. Gatlin, Richard B. Gatlin, Harvey M. Sloan, and George A. Sloan.

Pauline graduated from Morenci High School in Arizona in 1959. She attended Western New Mexico University in Silver City, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1963. She subsequently graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a Masters of Education degree in Special Education with an emphasis in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in 1965.

While living in Tucson, Pauline met David Foote Haynes, and they were married June 17, 1966 in Pauline’s home church in Clifton, Arizona. On December 20, 1971, a daughter was born to them, Clarissa Rose Ellen.

On their 50th wedding anniversary, David gave Pauline fifty yellow roses to commemorate the flowers she had carried in their wedding ceremony. This past June marked their 52nd anniversary.

David and Pauline pastored Deaf congregations in Trenton, New Jersey and Albuquerque, New Mexico. They also pastored hearing congregations in New Mexico and at Grand Canyon National Park. Pauline’s first teaching position was at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind in Tucson, Arizona where she made the much sought after salary of $5,000 per year. Other teaching positions included teaching the Deaf, Special Education, ESL, and fifth grade classes in public schools, usually located in the cities or towns where she and David pastored. Pauline finished her 41-year teaching career in Pasco, Washington at Ruth Livingston Elementary School teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

Pauline loved books, music, and nature. She was an accomplished musician, playing the piano and singing for her family and in church services. She had a particular love for traditional church hymns.

She spent as much time as possible in the mountain areas of Arizona, New Mexico, and Washington, enjoying the abundant wildlife and cool temperatures. She enjoyed gardening, taking much pleasure in growing a wide variety of roses and other flowers in the garden around her home in Kennewick.

Pauline is preceded in death by both of her parents, Harvey and Evelyn Sloan, and two of her brothers, Harvey and George.

She is survived by her husband David, her daughter Clarissa, son-in-law Chris Thorne, and grandson David Martin Thorne. She is additionally survived by her brothers Merl Gatlin of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Richard Gatlin of Fruita, Colorado.

She will be deeply missed and remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

A family graveside service has already taken place at Riverview Heights Cemetery in Kennewick overlooking the Columbia River.
