Willie was born on April 20, 1936 in Weirton, West Virginia to David and Annie May Gregory. In 1954, he was a proud graduate of Dunbar High School in Weirton. That same year, Willie joined the United States Air Force where he was honored to serve for 22 years and retired as a Technical sergeant.
After retiring from the Air Force, Willie worked with the Department of Corrections at the Goldsboro Correctional Center where he was chosen as Correctional Officer of the Year in 1987. He was a member of The Epicurean Civic Club of Goldsboro, the C.S. Brown Masonic Lodge, and volunteered at the Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro.
Willie was preceded in death by his wife, Viola, and his father and mother, David and Annie May. Also preceding him were three sisters, Minnie, Ethel, and Della. He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda, one sister, Helen, and four brothers, Frank, Phillip, John, Ernest and a host of nieces and nephews.
Willie’s parental love extended far beyond his only daughter as young people who have grown up around him and benefitted from his fatherly guidance still refer to him as “Dad”.
The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 30, 2019 at St. Mark Church of Christ, 700 West Ash Street in Goldsboro, with the Bishop Alton A. Smith officiating.
Visitation was held at Haskins Funeral Home in Goldsboro on Thursday, August 29, 2019 from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m-7:00 p.m.
Entombment was made in Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum.
