Col. Ezra Eugene Stickley, of Woodstock, aged 76 years, one of the most widely known lawyers of the Valley of Virginia, died tonight in the Winchester Memorial Hospital.
An operation performed several weeks ago, appearing to be recovering until last week when he suffered a relapse.
He was a native of Shenandoah County and is survived by his widow, six sons and one daughter.
Colonel Stickley served on the staff of General Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War and participated in many battles.
At the battle of Antietam a shell struck his horse and exploded and a piece of it struck Colonel Stickley, tearing off an arm and fracturing several ribs. He was carried off the field and brought to Winchester and nursed back to life.
