Born September 5, 1921 in Fulton County, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Pittman and Mary Elizabeth Sipes Schooley.
She attended Peoples Assembly of God in Great Cacapon. Ruth attended public schools in Harrisonville, PA and had worked at Hepburn and Dillon Orchards. She worked seasonally at local canneries, including Little Miss, Aulabaugh’s and Kesecker’s. Ruth had also worked as a cook at Weaver’s Restaurant in Hancock, MD. She enjoyed baking cookies, picking berries, making vegetable soup and was known for her mashed potato donuts. She was a homemaker for most of her life.
Ruth is survived by her children, Oleta Jane Ridgeway and Betty Jean Sipe, both of Great Cacapon and Debra Ann Michael of Berkeley Springs, 12 grandchildren, Richard Ridgeway, Jr., Rhonda Johnson, Susan Combs, Jimmy Sipe, Tammy Unger and Summer McClintock, all of Berkeley Springs, Teresa Hovermale of Great Cacapon, Kimberly Hensley of Martinsburg, WV, Jeremy Michael of Tucson, AZ, Karla Ziler and Karen Bartgis, both of Hedgesville and Chad Sipe of Hancock, 24 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Clay Fischer, one daughter, Shirley Elizabeth Chambers, three sisters, Ethel Lowery, Laura Landers and an infant sister, two brothers, Kenneth Schooley and Russell Schooley and one great granddaughter, Courtney Jeanette Ziler.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV with Pastor Ronnie Lynch officiating. Interment will be in Great Cacapon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
