Byron D. Bates, 91, of Milan, died Jan. 7, 2008, at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 10, with services at noon at Preemption United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Memorials may be made to Preemption United Methodist Church.
He was born March 3, 1916, in Carlinville, Ill., to Byron G. and Suzy Johnson Bates. He married Helen McRae in September 1940 in Davenport. She died in 1983. He married Lorraine Long on Aug. 22, 1984, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She died in 1998.
Byron was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal for 26 years as a machine operator. He enjoyed repairing watches throughout his entire life. He also raised Semital cattle on his farm. He was a member of Preemption United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a special friend, Millie Allison, Davenport; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Lillian Bates, Carlinville; nephews, Ed Bates, Gary Bates, and Frank Bates; stepgrandson, Jeff Koester, Milan.
