Audrey Gray was born on her parents' farm at Denton, Kansas, on January 27, 1926. She was the daughter of Chester Denton and Agnes Sharp. Her hometown was named after her great-great grandfather. Her family later moved to Oswego, Kansas, then to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and finally to Creston, Iowa.

After completing high school, Audrey attended the Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, Nebraska. She worked for a time as a secretary for Coca-Cola and Metropolitan Life Insurance and later, when her children were older, worked as a legal secretary and was active in the family business in Shenandoah with her husband, Milton Gray.

She was married to Milton at Shenandoah on September 26, 1948. They had two children, Stanley and Crystal.

Audrey was survived by her daughter, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was also survived by two brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband (1996), her son and her parents.
