John graduated from Charlotte High School in Charlotte, MI in 1955 and from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Agriculture and Floriculture in 1959. He married Carole Schmitt in 1961 and had Kevin and Kimberlyn. He and his family tent camped in 47 states. He enjoyed genealogy research and traced his Forte family back to a small village in Italy called Castellanata. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts as a troop leader, MSU Alumni as Treasurer, Toledo Metroparks, FOCUS, Mended hearts, Lathrop House, the Sylvania senior Center and Happy Hearts United at Flower Hospital. He was a member of the Episcopal Church at St. Mark's and St. Andrew's, Toledo, where he served as a Stephen's Minister and as a Eucharistic Minister and Lay reader for over 40 years.

He worked at Schramms Florist until 1962. He was an award-wining salesman for Sears-Roebuck until 1978 and then with Whirlpool until 1993. He worked for Appliance Parts Supply/Heat Distributors until he retired in 2003.
