In 1937 he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the 1936 murder of Littleport farmer Dan Shine. At the time he was described as a junk dealer from Manchester.
In December 1959 Iowa Governor Herschel Loveless commuted his sentence to 99 years and in July 1960 he was paroled from the state penitentiary.
He died at Peoples Hospital in Independence, services were held at Shelly Funeral Home in Manchester, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Masonville.
