Royal British Navy Admiral. He began his naval career as a cadet in 1891 and reached the rank of Captain in 1916, serving on the HMS Colossus sinking two German cruisers during World War I. He was promoted to Vice Admiral in 1930 and was made Second Sea Lord, in charge of naval personnel in 1932. Promoted Admiral of the Fleet in 1936, he commanded his fleet during the Spanish Civil War and was rewarded for his efforts with a knighthood in 1937. In 1939, he was appointed First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff serving until ill health forced him to resign in September 1943.
