Medical doctor. She was a practitioner who became the first registered female doctor in New Zealand and was the first to work in a general practice in New Zealand. She was born the daughter of Scottish immigrants and attended high school where she became a dux alongside her twin Christina. She attended University of Otago Dunedin School of Medicine where she became the second woman to complete medical school in New Zealand. During the Influenza pandemic of 1918, she worked to care for those who had contracted the flu in the town of Waimate, where she acted as superintendent of the hospital. She became known for taking on several roles to support ill patients such as milking patients' cows and cooking food for their children in their own homes. Despite her tireless efforts, she fell ill and passed away at the age of forty-five years. A statue to her memory was unveiled in 1923 which was the first statue erected to a woman in New Zealand other than Queen Victoria.
