Pioneer Utah Merchant Dies In S. L. Hospital

Jesse Wallace Hardy, 75, of 355 Downington Avenue, pioneer merchant of Salt Lake, died in a local hospital Friday at 3:05 p. m. of a paralytic stroke.

Mr. Hardy was a partner in the old mercantile store of Barnes & Hardy, which was located in the Constitution building on upper Main Street. He was born in Salt Lake December 30, 1857, a son of Leonard Wilford and Sophia Goodrich Hardy.

In 1899 Mr. Hardy left the mercantile business and moved to Canada, where he was instrumental in the colonization of southern Alberta. He returned to Salt Lake 22 years ago and for several years was employed by the Descret News. Mr. Hardy retired from active business 15 years ago.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Skidmore Hardy; two sons, Leonard Wilford and Frank S. Hardy; four daughters, Mrs. E. S. Allen, Mrs. R. M. Forrest, Mrs. B. E. Crockett and Mrs. Aretta Sanders; two brothers, Leonard G. and Owen S. Hardy; four sisters. Mrs. Isabella Hanson and Mrs. Rhoda Garn, all of Salt Lake; Mrs. Lena Jenkinsen of San Francisco and Mrs. Martha McKaig of Oakland; and 25 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:30 p. m. in the Belvedere L. D. S. Ward chapel, Sixth East Street and Downington Avenue. Friends may call at the Continental room of the Deseret Mortuary, 36 East Seventh South Street, until time of services Burial will take place in the city cemetery.

Jesse Wallace Hardy, 75, died November 3, 1933, of a cerebral hemorrhage, in the Salt Lake General Hospital. He had been a resident of Salt Lake for 22 years. His occupation, retail merchant was for 40 years.

His parents are Sophia Goodrich Hardy and Leonard Wilford Hardy. Desert Mortuary handled the funeral arrangements. Interment was in the Salt Lake City Cemetery on November 5, 1933.

Surviving him are his wife, Josephine Skidmore Hardy.

Jesse Wallace Henry was the son of Sophia Lois Hardy and Leonard Wilford Hardy.

Jesse married first Mirian Young on August 28, 1878. His second wife was Elizabeth Skidmore. They were married on November 25, 1880 In Salt Lake City, Utah. Elizabeth had a sister Josephine Skidmore and she became his third wife on July 27, 1893.
