Mary Elizabeth Pate
May 13, 2021

Mary Elizabeth Lowery Pate slipped quietly away May 13, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Lowery and sister of the late O.W. (Buddy) Lowery, Jr. (Jewel.) She was a graduate of Isaac Litton High School and Ward-Belmont College. In 1950 she married her husband of 56 years, Earl Graves Pate, Jr. (deceased.)

She is survived by her daughter, Melinda Pate Baker (Walter); and son, Earl Graves (Skip) Pate, III (Frances); and her beloved granddaughters, Perry Elizabeth and Mary Parker Graves Pate.

Although growing up in Nashville, Mary Elizabeth was a country girl at heart and loved her frequent childhood visits to her grandmothers' farms near Gallatin, Tennessee. From them she learned respect for a life of honest work, integrity and simple pleasures. She also developed a love of the land and what it could grow, especially flowers. Her home was never without an artful arrangement of blooms from her garden and her skill has won many blue and even tri-color ribbons. In 2019 she was honored with a Life Membership in the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs.

Mary Elizabeth was an avid reader from early childhood. The written word was her constant companion and source of entertainment and knowledge. An open book or newspaper was always on her ottoman.

She had a generous and compassionate spirit. Her heart was tender and easily moved by those in pain or need. One of her happiest memories was selling Big Brother's papers on a snowy Christmas Eve a half century ago. Her faith was quiet but sincere and she was a member of Indian Lake Peninsula Church (formerly Bluegrass Baptist.)

As we tenderly lay her to rest we thank all those family and friends of long-standing who have reached out through cards and calls to catch up and brighten her day as well as support us on our journey. Each connection was a blessing.

Arrangements are being handled by Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.
