Arthur K. Purpur, bowler, former Montour County Treasurer

Arthur K. Purpur, 85, of 209 Bloom St., a member of the state bowling Hall of fame and one-time Montour County Treasurer, died Friday at Grandview Health Home, where he had been a guest since November.

Born March 11, 1904, he was a son of the late Frederick and Elizabeth Berger Purpur.

Mr. Purpur was a lifetime resident of Danville. He was a 1923 graduate of Danville High School and a former employee of KSV Corp. and TRW Inc., both of Danville.

He was an accountant and was elected Montour County treasurer, serving two terms from 1970 - 1978. He was the 1st Ward councilman in the late 1950s, and recently served as a member of the Geisinger Medical Center Authority.

An avid bowler, Mr. Purpur served 33 years as secretary of the Danville Bowler's Association. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Bowling Hall of Fame, Trinity Lutheran Church, Danville, for 70 years and served as a Sunday school supervisor and secretary for 20 years.

He was a member of Friendship Fire Company, Elks, Masonic Lodge, and Royal Arch Chapter, all of Danville, and the Red Cross of Constantine and Caldwell Consistory, both of Bloomsburg.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Ruth E. Dark, January 4, 1975.

In addition to his wife of 13 years, Ruth Ledger Spade Purpur, who is also a guest of the Grandview Health Home, he is survived by a son, Ralph E. of Loydsneck, N.Y.; two daughters, Beverly Hartman of Felton and Rachelle Cooper of Danville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Purpur was the last survivor in his family.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church, East Market and Church Streets, Danville, under the direction of the Frank W. Roat Funeral Home, Danville. The Rev. Dr. Martin Kessler and John W. Harkins will officiate.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8.

The family will provide flowers. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mr. Purpur's name to the American Cancer Society, Danville.
