(Previously thought to be the daughter of Jacob and Jane Wells Randall)

Hannah Bowen Randall was the daughter of Mayberry (Maberry) and Hannah Sparks Randall.

She presents a challenge for genealogical researchers in that she is easily confused with her niece, Hannah Susannah Bowen Randall (daughter of this Hannah’s brother Benjamin), who married Isaac Wells Randall (son of Jacob and Jane Wells Randall). She may also be mistaken for her sister-in-law, Hannah A. Randall Bowen (1838-1919, sister of Isaac Wells Randall, daughter of Jacob and Jane Randall—Record # 36222359), who married this Hannah’s brother, Samuel Carson Bowen.

It appears that this Hannah Bowen Randall married another son of Jacob and Jane Wells Randall, Robert Randall. The marriage book for Cleveland County lists a marriage on November, 1863 between “LC” or “SC” Randall and Hannah “Bowin”. However, a thorough search of the census records from 1840-1870 of Cleveland and surrounding counties reveals neither a Randall male with the initials “LC” nor with a first name beginning with the letter “L”. It is more likely the minister wrote the initials “SC”—a slip of the mind— of Robert’s brother Samuel C Randall, who was already married at the time. Therefore, I believe this to be an error on the part of the minister or clerk who registered the marriage.

As for Robert Randall, some people have associated him with a memorial for RH Randall who may have died near Petersburg, VA in 1865. While this is a possibility, I have found no record to date for a Robert Randall (or with matching initials) who served in the Civil War and can be conclusively proven to be the son of Jacob Randall. So, while it is entirely possible that, like his brother John Allison Randall, Robert served and died in the war, we must be cautious until this can be satisfactorily proven.

What CAN be satisfactorily proven is that this same Hannah Bowen Randall, was living in the household of her father-in-law, Jacob Randall, with her young son Miles Hamilton Randall when the 1870 census was enumerated. The same census will prove her brother Samuel to be married to Jacob’s daughter Hannah A. (Randall) Bowen, and her niece Hannah (Bowen) Randall to be married to Isaac Wells Randall. Therefore, the Hannah listed in Jacob’s household in 1870 MUST be this Hannah, mother of Miles. Further, the 1880 census clearly identifies her as the daughter-in-law of Jacob Randall, and Miles as his grandson. All the spouses of Jacob Randall’s other sons, besides Robert, have been identified, so Robert is the only logical means by which Hannah, the mother of Miles, can be Jacob’s daughter-in-law.

Hannah never remarried and remained in the household of her father-in-law Jacob until his death in 1897. After his death, she lived with her son Miles and his wife until her death. (The census taker, in 1900, misspelled her name as “Anner”.)
