Michael was born and grew up in Salem, OR. After high school, he attended college for a brief time before joining the Army. He successfully completed a tour in Viet Nam and was discharged in 1970, the same year that he was married. After his discharge, he and his wife moved to Eugene where he attended the University of Oregon. After graduation, they moved to Washington to be close to his wife's family. They had two children. They divorced in 1987 and he moved first to Auburn and then to Oregon, where he stayed until a stroke forced him to return to Washington to live with his daughter. He died of cardiac arrest a couple of years later.
